As a yoga instructor it is important to know my weaknesses. My human tendencies. One of those is my effort and attention to suffering. In yoga theory we study the practice of detaching from suffering or pleasure. This is the ancient wisdom. As a young athlete, I was taught that pain or suffering meant I was working hard and passionate about dance - earning my stars - but in reality I wasn’t breathing, enjoying, expanding or truly experiencing my art or practice - I was forcing my way through it with gritted teeth. That is where yoga brings me home. Yoga isn’t just the asanas or movement, in fact that’s only 10% of the magic, it’s the stillness at the end where you feel one with self and the universe. It’s when you remember and can sit with self.

Repeating to myself. Always. You are not here to suffer, you are here to remember. Who you are. Who you’ve been. Where you are going.

the older I get, the less I care to appease to the needs of others. everyone wants a bite of your time but what about you? PSA less fucks = slow moments and happy self. I say it A LOT in my classes because it’s true. In a world where we give so much of ourselves and attention to everyone else and everything thing else … how can you claim some of that energy back, inevitably making you a stronger and wiser person for those close ones around you.
